  1. Badoglio, Pietro 1871-1956. Italian soldier
  2. and Fascist politician. A veteran of
  3. campaigns against the peoples of Tripoli and
  4. Cyrenaica, in 1935 he became commander in
  5. chief in Ethiopia, adopting ruthless measures
  6. to break patriot resistance. He was created
  7. viceroy of Ethiopia and duke of Addis Ababa
  8. in 1936. He resigned during the disastrous
  9. campaign into Greece 1940 and succeeded
  10. Mussolini as prime minister of Italy from
  11. July 1943 to June 1944, negotiating the
  12. armistice with the Allies.
